Our New Jersey dentists appreciate when patients help them out by doing these 4 simple things to prepare for their dental cleaning.

How to Prepare

Here’s what you should be doing to make each cleaning a smooth and easy process:

  1. Brush and floss daily.  The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day for optimal oral health.  Additionally, you should floss once a day to get rid of food particles under the gum line that your toothbrush cannot reach.
  2. Update your medical history.  It’s important for your dentist to be aware of any medical conditions that may affect your teeth and gums, such as diabetes, GERD or anemia.  Additionally, they should be aware of all medications you are taking to make sure there will be no adverse reaction with fluoride or other treatments.  Therefore, when you fill out the questionnaire your dental office gives you, please answer every question honestly and to the best of your abilities!
  3. Eat a light meal.  Our experts recommend eating a light meal prior to your appointment.  Avoid popcorn, candy or other snacks that may easily get stuck in your teeth.  The reason we recommend this is due to the fact that your appointment may take longer than expected if your dentist finds an abnormality they need to address.  Additionally, they will probably tell you to avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after your cleaning.
  4. Write down questions you have for your dentist.  Around 45% of Americans report at least a moderate level of fear of dental visits.  Much of this fear can be alleviated by writing down, or typing into your phone, any questions and concerns that arise in the time between cleanings.  It’s hard to remember a minor concern that popped into your head several months ago, so taking the time to write things down will make things easier for you and your dentist.
