WE STAND READY TO SEE PATIENTS!

The stay-at-home order had us all stuck inside; and for many, that meant delaying routine dental check-ups, preventative dental care visits, and even important dental procedures like extractions, fillings, crowns, root canals or implants. If this sounds like you, it’s time to take action. And if you’re looking for a practice that both provides top-notch patient-focused care and takes your health and safety seriously, look no further.

At Chestnut Ridge Dental, hygiene and safety have always been a priority at our office and we are confident we can provide a safe environment for you and your family during this time. 

Our office follows infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We follow the activities of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued.  We do this to make sure that our infection control procedures are current and adhere to each agencies’ recommendations.

To that end, we have further enhanced our our office policies which are focused on increasing everyone’s personal safety:

  • Prior to an appointment with us, our office will communicate with you to ask some screening questions.  You’ll be asked these same questions again when you arrive at the office.
  • Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients.  That might mean that you are offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment. We will make every effort to accommodate your choice of day, time and provider, however we ask that you be as flexible as possible as we return to our “new normal”.
  • We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any time.
  • We are limiting any extra guests in our office.  Please limit to one guardian or parent for the patient being treated.  All others will be asked to wait outside or in their car.
  • Families will be advised to wait in their cars until we are ready for them.  Please call us upon arrival and we will call you when we are ready.
  • We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office. You will also find some in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed.
  • Our waiting room will no longer offer magazines, children’s toys and so forth, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect.
  • Universal screening of all patients and their parents or companions will be performed with a non- contact infrared thermometer.
  • Patients and/or guardians must arrive with a mask or face covering which should be worn at all times.
  • We’ve installed a temporary plexiglass barrier in the checkout area.
  • We’ve installed an air purification system with UV light technology to provide the highest level of air purification available. This system will purify air throughout the entire office, not just our treatment rooms!
    • We feel lucky to have individual rooms for appointments – that means no need to socially distance between chairs in an open room.
  • All of our team members are health screened daily.

WE HAVE GREAT NEWS!

Effective Monday, June 1, 2020, we will be open to resume general and preventive dental care to our patients and we are confident we can provide a safe environment for you and your family.  We will be open to provide routine dental checkups as well as completing any outstanding dental treatment. As we have been throughout this pandemic, we are still available for any and all emergency appointments. Dear Chestnut Ridge Dental Patients and Friends,

By order of Governor Phil Murphy, all dental practices have been asked to suspend services due to the COVID-19 pandemic, except in the case of emergencies. As such all of our regularly scheduled appointments will be rescheduled until the stay-at-home order has been lifted.

At Chestnut Ridge Dental we treat patients of all ages, backgrounds and histories. That includes those with a fear of the dentist, children, the elderly, adults with special needs and those who are considered neuroatypical or “on the spectrum”.  In order to accommodate all types of patients, and to ensure their comfort as well as their oral health, we are pleased to offer Sedation Dentistry with a Dental Anesthesiologist on staff. 

Dr. Jonathan Mendia is our licensed Dental Anesthesiologist.  He earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and then completed a two year post-doctoral residency in Dental Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).  There are only six Dental Anesthesiology programs of this kind in the country that provide such vigorous training!

So, what are Sedation Dentistry and Dental Anesthesiology? 

Dental Anesthesiology, or Sedation dentistry, is the most advanced form of dental sedation. It combines sedative and pain relieving drugs given orally or intravenously to create a dream-like state of deep, calm relaxation for an entire dental procedure. Sedation can be used for everything from invasive procedures to a simple teeth cleaning. The level of sedation depends on the severity of fear or need and how invasive your procedure is.

The Levels of Sedation Include:

  • Minimal sedation — you are awake but relaxed.
  • Moderate sedation (formerly called “conscious sedation”) — you may slur your words when speaking and not remember much of the procedure.
  • Deep sedation — you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.
  • General anesthesia — you are completely unconscious.

What Types of Sedation Are Used in Dentistry?

  • Inhaled minimal sedation. You breathe nitrous oxide — commonly known as “laughing gas” — combined with oxygen through a mask that’s placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax.
  • Oral sedation. Depending on the total dose given, oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate. For minimal sedation, you take a pill. This is the type of anesthesia most commonly associated with sedation dentistry. 
  • IV moderate sedation. You receive the sedative drug through a vein, so it goes to work more quickly. This method allows the dentist to continually adjust the level of sedation.
  • Deep sedation and general anesthesia. You will get medications that will make you either almost unconscious or totally unconscious — deeply asleep — during the procedure. While you are under general anesthesia, you cannot easily be awakened until the effects of the anesthesia wear off or are reversed with medication.

After your Procedure

When waking up, patients usually have no memory of the noises, smells, needles, or drilling that took place during treatment. Patients feel like they’ve had a deep and satisfying sleep – like no time has passed at all! No pain, discomfort or fear. Furthermore, sedation recovery time typically only lasts 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure is complete. After that, you’re free to return home.

  • Increased patient comfort and relaxation 
  • Little or no memory of treatment 
  • Control of gag reflex 
  • Movement control 
  • Decreased pain sensitivity 
  • Time saving- allowing dental treatment to be accomplished in fewer visits, sometimes as little as one visit
